  Remember Filey Butlins Exhibition

The Remember Filey Butlins Exhibition will be at Sewerby Hall & Gardens from Saturday 20th May - Sunday 29th October 2006

The exhibition covers the complete history of the former Butlins Camp at Filey. Spanning from the 1930’s when Billy Butlin acquired the land from the Hummanby farming family, the Milners, right through to it’s present day redevelopment. The exhibition incorporates eight decades of memories through photographs, archival material, cine film, interviews and text. Former staff and holidaymakers, historians and local people define the camp’s rich heritage, relive times of a bygone era and ponder what the future may bring.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to see a display of poetry and photography created by children from Bridlington’s New Pasture Lane Primary School, who worked with artists and former holidaymakers on the accompanying project ‘My Dream Holiday…

Exhibition Opening

The Remember Filey Butlins exhibition took place at Leisure World in Bridlington from 8th - 12th May and was a great success. Over the four days, we had over 1000 visitors, attracting a great mix of people, some of whom travelled from great distances to attend. People commented that the exhibition bought back many happy childhood memories and was a really nostalgic experience.

The exhibition previewed on Monday night with former Butlins redcoats Graham Thompson and Steve Mitchell providing much entertainment with their recreated ‘knobbly knees competition.’ Children from New Pasture Lane Primary also visited the exhibition in fancy dress and took part in an exciting fancy dress competition hosted by Graham.

‘Filey Butlins Remembered’ on 87.8FM broadcast from Bridlington Community Resource Centre.

The weeklong community radio broadcast, transmitted by Seaside Radio was also run with the help of many volunteers. People tuning in heard lots people sharing their memories of Filey Butlins as well as live interviews with many local community groups. Children from New Pasture Lane Primary also visited the station to read out their poems and discuss their school project.

The radio broadcast was linked with the exhibition at Leisure World and volunteers read out on air memories written on postcards that had been left by visitors at the exhibition. We also had some really magical moments in the week - on Thursday the radio broadcast on air a request for information about a band which played at the Filey Butlins camp called Sandra and the Boyfriends. The following day a guitarist from the band came along to the station and amazingly shared some of his stories on air. The week was rounded off fantastically on Friday afternoon, when there was a redcoat’s reunion with no less than five former Filey Butlins Redcoats all broadcasting together a journey down memory lane.

All in all a great week, which saw people being reunited after many years, memories being shared and lots of nostalgia. Thanks to everyone involved…

Goodnight Campers
